The Dawakin Tofa Academic Forum (DAF) has urged the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State to reconsider its decision suspending Islamiyya sessions in public schools.
In a statement signed by the forum’s Secretary General, Malam Mustapha Hassan Hasheem, DAF said the appeal followed a resolution reached at its Executive Committee meeting held on May 23, 2026.
The forum said it decided to intervene following concerns expressed by members of the public over the suspension of after-school Islamiyya classes.
DAF noted that the use of public school facilities for Islamiyya lessons after official school hours had been a long-standing practice in many communities across the local government area.
According to the forum, the suspension could increase public distrust of Western education and negatively affect efforts aimed at improving school enrolment, particularly in rural communities.
The group advised the local government to engage relevant stakeholders to develop workable guidelines that would allow Islamic and Western education to coexist under proper regulation, rather than imposing an outright ban.
“We remain ready to work with the Local Government and all relevant stakeholders toward an amicable resolution of the issue and the overall development of education in Dawakin Tofa Local Government,” the statement said.
DAF also appealed to Islamiyya teachers, students, parents and residents to remain calm and law-abiding while efforts are being made to resolve the matter peacefully.
