The Kano State Government has commissioned the newly expanded Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to enhance disease control and public health emergency response across the state.
The commissioning ceremony was performed on Friday by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Speaking during the event, the commissioner explained that the original Sub-National Emergency Operations Centre was established and commissioned on January 30, 2013, during the peak of the polio outbreak in Nigeria, particularly in Kano State, which was then regarded as one of the major centres of polio transmission in the country.
He said the facility played a crucial role in coordinating activities that significantly contributed to the successful fight against polio and other related diseases until Kano State was eventually declared polio-free.
Dr Yusuf stated that the expansion of the facility became necessary due to increasing activities and growing demands from development partners, noting that Kano currently hosts the highest number of health-sector development partners in the country.
The commissioner expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the National Emergency Operations Centre, and development partners for their continuous support and collaboration toward improving healthcare services and disease surveillance in the state.
He reassured residents of the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector, adding that more health-related projects would soon be commissioned across Kano State.
