Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University (KHAIRUN) has hosted a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the Civil Society–Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) on a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening collaboration in the fight against malnutrition.
The delegation, led by Mrs. Mandu Ubong Solomon and Mr. Ridwan Awosanya, met with the university’s management to discuss joint efforts to address the growing burden of malnutrition among women and children in Nigeria.
During the meeting, the visitors highlighted the prevalence and far-reaching consequences of malnutrition on health, education and socio-economic development. They outlined ongoing interventions by their organisations, including advocacy, nutrition education, policy support and community-based programmes, while stressing the need for stronger partnerships with tertiary institutions to advance research, awareness and sustainable nutrition initiatives.
Vice-Chancellor of KHAIRUN, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba, commended the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and CS-SUNN for their commitment to improving public health and reaffirmed the university’s readiness to collaborate on programmes that promote nutrition, research and community development.
He also presented an overview of the university’s academic philosophy, noting its emphasis on entrepreneurship, moral values and international languages. He further highlighted the Abdul Samad Rabiu (ASR) Foundation Scholarship Scheme, which offers eligible students a ₦500,000 tuition waiver to improve access to quality higher education.
A major highlight of the visit was the presentation of an award to Prof. Hassana Sani Darma in recognition of her outstanding contributions to nutrition and public health. She was honoured as one of the Ten Most Influential Women in Nutrition in Kano State.
Congratulating the award recipient, Prof. Garba described the recognition as a testament to KHAIRUN’s growing reputation for academic excellence, impactful research and meaningful contributions to national development.
