The Kano State Government has approved the distribution of 775 fire extinguishers to Science and Technical Schools across the state to enhance safety and provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Science and Technical Schools Board (STSB), Prof. Dahiru Sale Muhammad, disclosed this during an enlightenment meeting with the board’s management, principals of Science and Technical Schools and representatives of the Kano State Fire Service at Government Technical College, Kano.
He said the meeting was organised to educate principals on the proper and professional use of fire extinguishers and other safety equipment in the event of a fire outbreak.
According to him, about 70 per cent of activities in Science and Technical Schools involve practical sessions in workshops and laboratories, where electricity-powered equipment and generators are extensively used.
He, therefore, stressed the need for adequate fire prevention and safety measures to protect lives and property in the schools.
Speaking during the meeting, the facilitator from the Kano State Fire Service, Higher Fire Superintendent Ibrahim Umar Muhammad, said the programme was designed to complement the state government’s efforts to strengthen preventive measures for safeguarding lives and property at the grassroots.
He said the fire extinguishers would be distributed to strategic areas within the schools, including administrative blocks, laboratories, workshops and hostels, to ensure adequate coverage and facilitate prompt response during fire emergencies.
Meanwhile, working materials and equipment have also been distributed to Science and Technical Schools across the state to enhance teaching and learning.
The items include sewing machines, gas cookers and other essential tools and equipment required for laboratory and workshop practicals.
In a goodwill message, the Principal of Government Technical College, D/Tofa, and Zonal ANCOPPS Chairman, Alhaji Salisu Tijjani, who spoke on behalf of other principals, commended the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his commitment to investing in the education sector.
He described the administration’s investment in education as a significant step towards improving the quality of teaching and learning, as well as developing the technical skills of students across the state.
