The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kano State chapter, has commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the state.
The Chairman of the chapter, Dr Abubakar Nagoma Usman, gave the commendation while briefing journalists on activities lined up for this year’s Physicians’ Week, themed “Securing the Future of Medicine in Nigeria”, in Kano.
Usman said the commendation became necessary considering the state government’s efforts in infrastructure, primary healthcare, emergency medical services, specialist care, workforce development and access to essential medicines and equipment.
He said the association is ready to work with the state government to actualise its set objectives.
“The NMA will continue to champion a healthcare system where medical practitioners can work safely and effectively, patients receive quality care, and young doctors can envision a fulfilling professional future in Nigeria,” he said.
Usman urged the public to prioritise preventive healthcare, attend routine medical check-ups, embrace appropriate health screening, seek timely medical attention and obtain medical advice from qualified professionals.
He also called on the media to partner with the medical profession in promoting accurate health information, combating misinformation, encouraging healthy lifestyles and raising awareness on physicians’ wellbeing and the need to modernise healthcare delivery.
“Our association remains committed to providing professional guidance, promoting ethical medical practice, supporting continuous professional development and advocating policies that improve both physicians’ welfare and patients’ outcomes,” he said.
He called for continuous reform of medical education to prepare future physicians for modern practice, saying medical training must incorporate digital literacy, technological innovations, research and lifelong learning.
According to him, activities lined up for the Physicians’ Week include medical outreach, lectures, visitations and a football match, among others.
