The Kano State Ministry of Justice, through its Citizens’ Rights Department, has received a formal complaint from concerned residents of Tassa Village in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area regarding the activities of sand miners operating within the community.
The residents alleged that the sand mining activities have led to significant soil erosion in the area, resulting in damage to several farmlands that serve as the primary source of livelihood for many families.
They further expressed concern that in cases where farms were affected, the compensation provided was inadequate and did not correspond with the extent of the losses incurred.
This was made known in a press release issued and signed by Najib Lawan Danbazau Public Relations Officer of the Ministry.
According to the statement the community members also raised alarm that the erosion has now progressed beyond farmlands and is gradually extending towards residential areas, creating fears that the situation may eventually threaten their homes if urgent measures are not taken.
In response to the complaint, the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kano State, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, SAN, accompanied by the Solicitor-General/Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, the Director of the Citizens’ Rights Department, Rabi Shehu Ahmad, and Principal State Counsel, Aishatu Yakubu Adamu, paid an on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected area.
During the visit, the Attorney-General and his delegation interacted with community members and inspected the affected sites in order to obtain firsthand information on the situation and better understand the concerns raised by the residents.
He assured the people of Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area that the Kano State Government remains committed to safeguarding the rights, safety, and welfare of its citizens.
Also emphasized that the present administration will not allow any activity capable of endangering communities or undermining the livelihoods of residents.
The Attorney-General further assured the community that a comprehensive report of the findings from the visit will be prepared within the week and submitted to the People’s Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He expressed confidence that the Governor will take the necessary steps to address the situation and ensure that the concerns of the affected residents are properly resolved.
