The Kano State Ministry of Justice has secured the conviction of an 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, for rape.
The defendant was prosecuted before High Court No. 24, Gwarzo Division, over an offence committed on November 30, 2024, at Sauna in Gabasawa Local Government Area of the state.
According to the ministry, the prosecution presented sufficient evidence to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Delivering judgment, the trial judge, Justice Aisha Mahmud, found Abdullahi guilty and sentenced him to 14 years imprisonment. The court, however, considered a plea for leniency made by his counsel before handing down the sentence.
The case was handled by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, alongside members of the prosecution team.
Reacting to the judgment, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude (SAN), commended the prosecution team for securing the conviction.
He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring justice in cases involving sexual offences and other forms of violence.
The ministry also reiterated its resolve to protect the rights and dignity of victims while ensuring offenders are brought to justice.
