The Kano State Government is stepping up efforts to unlock sustainable energy solutions by tapping into the potential of run-of-river hydropower as a catalyst for economic transformation.
The Honourable Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Engr. Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, made this known during a high-level stakeholder engagement workshop organized by UK PACT at Comfort Hub Hotel.
In his address, Engr. Shehu emphasized the strategic importance of harnessing Kano State’s abundant water resources to expand electricity generation, diversify the energy mix, and drive inclusive economic growth across the state.
He explained that run-of-river hydropower offers a viable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional energy sources, with minimal ecological impact, lower operational costs, and improved energy access, particularly for rural and underserved communities.
Engr. Shehu noted that the initiative aligns with the state government’s broader vision of promoting clean energy while creating avenues for investment, industrial growth, and job creation.
The Commissioner also called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, development partners, and private investors to fully harness the opportunities in the energy sector and tackle existing challenges effectively.
Speaking at the event, the Director General of the Kano Investment Promotion Agency (KANINVEST), Dr. Muhammad Nazir Halliru, highlighted the immense economic potential of run-of-river projects, stating that such initiatives would stimulate local economies, create employment, and enhance the livelihoods of citizens.
The workshop featured in-depth discussions on key opportunities and challenges in small-scale hydroelectric power generation, irrigation systems, and sustainable water resource management.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to creating an enabling environment that will attract investment and accelerate the development of renewable energy infrastructure across the state.
