A governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Jigawa State, Hon. Bashir Adamu (Matawallen Kazaure), has petitioned the party’s State Election Appeal Committee, calling for the nullification of the party’s governorship primary election held in the state.
In the petition he personally signed and made available to journalists, Adamu alleged that the exercise was marred by irregularities, breaches of party guidelines, and undue interference by party officials.
He claimed that the chairman of the primary election committee compromised neutrality by allegedly acting on directives from the State Executive Committee, adding that the official later declared the party’s candidate “under duress.”
Adamu further alleged that the State Executive Committee was compromised and worked in favour of another aspirant, Sabo Nagudu, to secure his emergence as the party’s candidate.
He also claimed that both state and local government party officials were involved in influencing the process, including the handling of election materials, which he said contributed to manipulation of the outcome.
According to him, there were deliberate delays in the distribution of election materials, particularly in the North-West Senatorial District, where materials reportedly arrived late at night after many party members had waited for hours without accreditation.
He said the delay led to frustration among eligible voters, many of whom allegedly left before voting commenced.
The aspirant also alleged that political thugs disrupted the exercise in some areas, snatching election materials and fabricating results in favour of his opponent.
He added that violence and intimidation forced the cancellation of the primary in four local government areas, arguing that such disruptions made the exercise inconclusive.
“Such acts of thuggery undermine the democratic process and infringe upon the rights of party members,” the petition read in part.
Adamu also questioned the legitimacy of the results announced by the State Executive Committee, insisting that only the party’s duly constituted Primary Election Committee has the authority to declare official outcomes.
He therefore urged the Appeal Committee to cancel the primary and order a fresh election, insisting that the exercise violated both party guidelines and provisions of the Electoral Act.
Adamu, who described himself as a loyal party member, expressed confidence that the ADC would consider his petition and ensure justice is served.
