The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Kano State, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude (SAN), has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to building a more efficient, transparent, and citizen-focused justice system.
Maude made this known while participating in the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme Phase II Steering Committee Meeting held in Abuja, where key stakeholders gathered to assess progress and strategize on improving justice sector delivery across Nigeria.
The meeting was chaired by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi (SAN), and represented by the Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba.
During deliberations, the Kano State Attorney General highlighted several priority areas requiring sustained attention. These include strengthening the capacity of justice sector personnel such as State Counsel, Magistrates, law enforcement officers, and public defenders, as well as improving the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL).
He also emphasized the need for greater integration of technology in justice delivery, particularly through electronic recording systems. Other recommendations included enhancing witness protection mechanisms, accelerating legal advisory processes, expanding non-custodial sentencing options, and fostering stronger institutional collaboration.
Maude further outlined ongoing and proposed reforms in Kano State, including amendments to the Penal Code, improved welfare packages for State Counsel, the reactivation of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), and better logistical support for the safe and timely transportation of inmates to court.
He commended the RoLAC Programme for its continued support, noting that such partnerships are essential for sustaining reforms and strengthening public trust in the justice system, in line with the agenda of the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The Attorney General reiterated the state’s determination to implement policies that will ensure justice is accessible, efficient, and fair for all citizens.
