Alhaji Kabiru Yusuf-Nadabo, a retired Assistant Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has called for the relocation of Singer Market to Dangwaro International Market in Kano.
Yusuf-Nadabo, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Jigawa, made the call in an interview with the online media Monday in Kano.
“This call has become necessary in order to address the recurring fire incidents that have plagued the market over the past 15 years,” he said.
“I was at the scene of the incident on Feb. 14 from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m., and we encountered difficulty accessing the area during rescue operations.
“It took about 12 hours to put out the fire. The current location of the market is not conducive for heavy-duty and articulated vehicles, posing serious safety risks.
“From a safety standpoint, the environment is not ideal for articulated vehicles to move freely,” he added.
Yusuf-Nadabo further explained that whenever a fire breaks out, firefighting trucks find it extremely difficult to access the affected areas.
He added that nearly 100 trucks enter the market daily to offload goods.
According to him, major adjoining roads, including Bello Road and Ibrahim Taiwo Road, are often completely blocked, compounding traffic congestion and hindering emergency response efforts.
“Based on my experience in traffic management and public safety, relocating the market to Dangwaro International Market will significantly reduce congestion and help prevent recurring fire outbreaks,” he said.
The retired FRSC officer urged the state government to act urgently in the interest of public safety and sustainable urban development.
Periscope.ng reports that the recent fire outbreak destroyed properties worth over N5 billion, affecting more than 1,000 businesses and leaving seven persons missing.
The market’s Chairman, Alhaji Junaid Zakari, disclosed this in an interview with periscope.ng in Kano on Sunday.
The reports that a massive fire broke out at the same market on Feb. 2. The fire, which started around 3:16 a.m., affected numerous shops before it was brought under control by firefighters and other emergency agencies. No loss of life was reported.
In November 2025, a dawn fire razed 44 shops at Singer Market, while in March 2023, more than 100 shops were destroyed in a similar incident.
