From Pain to Hope: How Abba Care Is Changing the Sickle Cell Story in Kano

Abba Vare Sickle Cell
Abba Vare Sickle Cell

By Sani Surajo Abubakar

The cry of a child in the middle of the night can mean many things. But for a family living with sickle cell disease, it can signal the beginning of another frightening journey—pain, sleeplessness, an emergency trip to the hospital, medication, possible blood transfusion and, often, another crushing financial burden.

For thousands of families in Kano State, this has been the painful reality of living with sickle cell disease.

A child may be forced to miss school for days. A mother may spend sleepless nights beside a hospital bed. A father may have to abandon work to search for money for medication. And just when the family thinks the crisis is over, another episode may begin.

It is against this difficult background that a quiet but profound transformation is taking place in Kano.

The transformation has a name: Abba Care.

On Monday, August 3, 2026, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf opened a new and significant chapter in the state’s fight against sickle cell disease when he commissioned the Abba Care Specialized Sickle Cell Treatment Centre at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital (MMSH).

For sickle cell patients and their families, the facility represents much more than bricks, equipment and medical personnel. It represents the possibility of receiving specialized care without the fear that treatment costs could push a family deeper into hardship.

The new centre is designed to provide comprehensive specialized services to people living with sickle cell disease under one roof.

Governor Yusuf described its commissioning as historic, declaring that it is the first of its kind in the history of Kano and, by extension, Northern Nigeria.

“We are commissioning the Sickle Cell Centre, the first of its kind in the history of Kano and by extension Northern Nigeria,” the Governor said.

He noted that sickle cell disease continues to affect thousands of families across the state, with many children experiencing repeated painful crises, sleepless nights and other health challenges.

But the Governor’s vision goes beyond treating patients only when they are in crisis.

The centre will provide free comprehensive diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care, patient education, health promotion and specialized management of sickle cell disease.

It will also strengthen research and innovation, opening another important front in Kano’s long-term response to the condition.

The commissioning of the specialized centre is the latest milestone in an intervention that began nearly two years earlier.

In November 2024, Governor Yusuf launched the Abba Care Sickle Cell Programme, with the ambitious objective of providing 100 percent free healthcare services to sickle cell patients across all 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State.

The philosophy behind the programme was straightforward: a patient’s ability to receive essential healthcare should not be determined by the financial circumstances of his or her family.

Since its launch, the programme has grown into a broad healthcare intervention covering diagnosis, medication, hospitalization, blood transfusion and specialist consultation.

By March 2026, figures released by the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) showed that 30,922 patients were receiving care under Abba Care, out of a target population of 39,816 beneficiaries across the state’s 44 LGAs.

Those figures represent far more than statistics.

They represent children, young people, mothers, fathers and families who now have a healthcare system designed to stand with them through one of the most challenging lifelong conditions.

Perhaps the most powerful element of Abba Care is its ability to remove one of the biggest obstacles facing sickle cell families: the cost of treatment.

Under the programme, beneficiaries receive diagnosis, medication, hospitalization, blood transfusion and specialist consultation free of charge.

KSCHMA finances the care provided to enrolled patients every month at primary and secondary healthcare levels, including services delivered through the three specialist hospitals.

The programme has also been expanded to provide primary healthcare services across all 44 LGAs, while secondary services are provided through specialized secondary health facilities.

For families that previously had to repeatedly find money for medication and hospital bills, this represents a major change.

The provision of prescribed sickle cell drugs at zero cost has eliminated a significant monthly treatment burden.

Another important intervention under Abba Care is the provision of Hydroxyurea, procured by KHETFUND on the directive of Governor Yusuf.

The drug plays an important role in sickle cell management by helping to reduce the frequency of painful crises for many patients.

Its availability under the programme therefore means more than simply supplying another medicine. It represents a shift towards proactive management—helping patients reduce complications and hospital admissions rather than waiting for crises to become severe.

Specialist consultations in haematology and paediatrics are also covered at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital and Khalipha Isyaku Rabiu Paediatric Hospital.

The intervention has deliberately extended beyond MMSH.

The Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital and Khalipha Isyaku Rabiu Paediatric Hospital are also providing specialized sickle cell care free of charge.

This expansion is particularly significant because many sickle cell patients are children who require specialized paediatric care and close monitoring.

By bringing these hospitals into the programme, Abba Care is creating a broader network through which patients can access appropriate services at different levels of care.

Abba Care also recognizes that effective healthcare is not only about drugs and hospital infrastructure.

Its Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) provide fortified pap, popularly known as Garin Kunu, to inpatients at MMSH and Khalipha Isyaku Rabiu hospitals.

At MMSH, which handles the largest volume of in- and out-patients, the RRTs engage directly with patients to assess services, identify challenges and reinforce support.

This direct contact is important because it allows the programme to hear from beneficiaries themselves.

It brings government intervention closer to the people it was designed to serve.

The impact of Abba Care is increasingly visible.

As specialized care continues to reach thousands of patients across the state, reports indicate a measurable decline in monthly hospital admissions and out-of-pocket expenditure among enrolled families.

For a statistician, this may simply be a downward curve on a chart.

For a mother, it may mean fewer nights spent in a hospital.

For a father, it may mean fewer emergency trips to find money for treatment.

For a child, it may mean fewer days away from school.

And for an entire family, it can mean the difference between living constantly in fear of the next crisis and having the confidence that help is available when it is needed.

That is where the true impact of Abba Care lies.

Sickle cell disease remains a lifelong condition. There is no shortcut to managing it. Patients require continuous medication, regular medical reviews, specialist attention, proper nutrition, counselling, health education and sustained monitoring.

But the burden of the disease can be reduced.

That is the direction Kano’s Abba Care programme is taking.

Rather than limiting intervention to emergency treatment, the programme brings together prevention, early diagnosis, medication, specialist consultation, hospitalization, blood transfusion, nutritional support, counselling and follow-up care.

The newly commissioned specialized centre at MMSH strengthens that model and provides a dedicated platform for specialized sickle cell management.

There is perhaps no better way to measure the meaning of Abba Care than through the lives of the people it touches.

It is the relief of a mother who no longer has to wonder where the money for her child’s medication will come from.

It is the hope of a father who knows that a hospital bill will not consume his family’s limited resources.

It is the smile of a young patient who can see a specialist without worrying about payment.

And it is the possibility of a child returning to school after receiving timely treatment instead of spending another painful week in a hospital.

These are the stories hidden behind the numbers.

And these are the stories that give meaning to the opening of the Abba Care Specialized Sickle Cell Treatment Centre.

The road ahead remains long. More patients need to be reached. Awareness must be strengthened. Research must be deepened. Medical personnel require continued support, while the sustainability of the programme must remain a priority.

But Kano has already taken a significant step.

From the launch of Abba Care in 2024 to reaching more than 30,000 patients and now establishing a dedicated specialized centre, the state is gradually rewriting the narrative around sickle cell disease.

For generations, sickle cell has been associated with pain, uncertainty, hospital admissions and financial hardship.

Abba Care is offering a different story.

A story of free access to healthcare.

A story of specialized treatment.

A story of families relieved of unbearable financial pressure.

A story of children given another chance to learn, grow and dream.

And, above all, a story of hope replacing pain.

Because behind every patient is a family, behind every crisis is a human being, and behind every number is a life worth saving.

In Kano, Abba Care is helping to ensure that sickle cell patients no longer have to face that battle alone.
