Residents of Fulatan Ward in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State have commenced community-led rehabilitation of roads linking Fulatan town with neighbouring villages and communities.
The annual exercise, which is being carried out by residents of the area, is aimed at improving transportation, preventing flooding and making movement and other daily activities easier for the people.
Speaking with the Rogo Local Government Information Officer, Abdu Bako Abdullahi, during a discussion on the ongoing project, a community activist from Fulatan, Malam Anas Garba Fulatan, said the initiative was a self-help effort that residents had sustained for many years.
Malam Anas said this year’s exercise began with the rehabilitation of the Fulatan–Unguwar Dawa and Fulatan–Hausawa roads.
According to him, the rehabilitation would improve transportation and boost farming, trade and other economic activities in the area.
He appealed to residents of Fulatan and neighbouring communities, as well as other stakeholders, particularly community leaders, to support the initiative.
He said contributions could be made in the form of money, food, equipment, labour, time or any other form of assistance that could strengthen the project.
Malam Anas added that the rehabilitation exercise would continue periodically, by the grace of God, until significant progress was made on roads connecting Fulatan with neighbouring communities.
Earlier, the Vice Chairman of the Fulatan Community Road Maintenance Committee, Malam Murtala Mai Shayi Fulatan, appealed to community leaders and other stakeholders to support the initiative with contributions that would help sustain the project.
He said the residents were making efforts to ensure that as many roads as possible received attention before government intervention, particularly to facilitate the movement of agricultural produce such as maize, tomatoes, pepper, onions, yams and other farm products.
Malam Murtala disclosed that the community had been carrying out the road maintenance initiative for more than 40 years.
He added that the exercise is conducted every Saturday, with residents from different parts of the area participating in the rehabilitation work.
