A truly effective representative views a public office not as a privilege, but as a solemn trust granted by the people. Leadership of this kind is defined by proximity to the citizenry, careful attention to their voices, and the translation of public needs into tangible actions, opportunities, and policies that enhance everyday life.
Electorates seek a transparent record of achievements: community development, advocacy for constituents, and prudent public resource management – a benchmark for evaluating representation quality.
Conversely, there are occasions when individuals attain elected office without the necessary preparation, vision, or commitment for meaningful governance. When public service is reduced to mere reaction to circumstances rather than guided by principle and purpose, the results are often missed opportunities, diminished engagement with the populace, and stalled progress on the critical issues that shape community well-being.
In such cases, the “accidental public servant” risks eroding both trust and the potential for meaningful change. For the communities of Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu, one principle stands out: true representation is grounded in steadfast commitment to the people, not in circumstance or chance.
In 2023, the residents of the Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu federal constituency found themselves at a pivotal historical juncture, a moment with the potential to shape their collective future for years to come.
They were confronted with a choice that carried both hope and uncertainty: whether to sustain the progress achieved under Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya, widely recognized for his consistent dedication to public service, or to place their trust in a new candidate whose promises, though compelling, had yet to demonstrate tangible results and whose record so far revealed only unfulfilled expectations. This decision transcended politics; it embodied the weight of public aspiration, the challenges of governance, and the community’s shared desire for a more secure and prosperous future.
The true measure of a legislator’s worth is not found in speeches or promises, but in unwavering dedication to the people he serve. A good representative listens with empathy, understands with sincerity, and acts with purpose to improve the lives of their community. Such a public servant stands with the people not only in moments of triumph, but also in times of hardship, shaping policies that address real needs rather than fleeting interests.
Before 2015, the communities of Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu endured years of neglect and slow, halting development. Basic infrastructure and essential services were long overdue, and hope for meaningful change had begun to fade.
Then Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya stepped forward, embracing the responsibility of representation with determination and a profound sense of duty. Slowly but steadily, his efforts began to bear fruit: roads were constructed, schools were revitalized, and communities finally began to feel the care, attention, and support they had waited for so long. His leadership reminded the people that committed service could transform hope into reality.
Above all, he remained deeply connected to the people—listening attentively to their concerns and putting the needs of his constituency above all else. His leadership was never about grand sugarcoat speeches or empty promises; it was about steady, unwavering action that delivered real, lasting results. Like a guiding hand during times of challenge, his deeds often spoke louder than words ever could.
His Legislative performance when the National Assembly resolved to set up an Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the debts owed to the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Hon. Gaya took the helm with skill and determination. Through his leadership, the committee achieved a historic outcome: petroleum marketers were held accountable, compelled to repay the debts they owed, and hundreds of billions of naira were returned to the government’s coffers. After admirably completing his mission recovering hundreds of billions of naira for the nation from unscrupulous oil marketers the leadership of the Assembly recognized Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya’s exceptional dedication and appointed him to the prestigious “16-Person” Strategic Committee tasked with revitalizing the country’s economy from its setbacks.
This committee became a beacon of hope in confronting Nigeria’s economic challenges, working tirelessly with ministries, agencies, and government institutions, while forging strong partnerships with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), civil society groups, and other key stakeholders. Their collective efforts aimed not merely to halt economic decline but to restore the nation to a trajectory of lasting growth, stability, and prosperity.
As Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream Sector), Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya showed commitment and leadership in promoting transparency and efficiency. When, the Nigerian Customs Service’s ban on offloading petroleum products near borders has caused hardship in border communities, restricting access and disrupting local economies.
“The National Assembly has directed the Downstream Petroleum Resources Committee to discuss the crisis with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministers of Interior and Petroleum Resources, Nigerian Customs Service, NNPC, and others, to address the hardship and safeguard affected citizens’ welfare.
Expressing deep concern over the implementation of NNPC’s recruitment of graduate trainees, the speaker has directed the Downstream Petroleum Committee to investigate the recruitment process in ensuring oil-producing communities get fair representation and opportunities, amid concerns over implementation.
Constituency project
“From 2015-2023, Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya improved education in Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu by building classrooms and offices in 30 wards. His AMG Education Support Program aided students through exam fee payments (NECO, WAEC), UTME form distribution, and tertiary education financial support. He gave monthly allowances to voluntary teachers, easing their burden, and many later received permanent appointment letters from the state government. He also built and upgraded healthcare centers in his constituency.
Hon. Gaya empowered women through skills programs: more than 3,000 women received goat, rearing, poultry, saloon skills with N20,000 capital. He provided boreholes (hand and engine-powered) and solar streetlights across his constituency. Hundreds of water pumps were distributed to youths for dry-season farming. He also built an earth dam in Ajingi and asphalt roads from Fanda to Albasu.”
Hon. Mahmud Gaya played a pivotal role in creating employment opportunities for youths across a wide range of institutions, including paramilitary and security agencies, the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Federal Inland Revenue Service, Central Bank of Nigeria, Kano Electricity Distribution Company, as well as various federal and state ministries.
“In 2023, the constituency voted for change, embracing new promises. Now, Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu residents question if it served them or was a fleeting promise. Uncertainty led many to choose new promises over experience. Now, Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu residents ask:Did it serve them, or fail to deliver?
Politics dazzles with excitement and competing narratives, but history shows representation’s value lies in tangible outcomes. A representative lacking vision, engagement, or connection leaves hope unfulfilled and progress stalled. This highlights voters’ profound responsibility. Communities thrive when leaders care, policies reflect people’s realities, and trust is built through consistent service.”
Without such leadership, development falters, and hope begins to wither. As the 2027 elections approach, the people of Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu are confronting a hard truth: authentic representation is not optional—it is essential. It cannot be forged from noise or empty promises alone. It is born from compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of the community. This reflection now raises a powerful question: what truly sets Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya apart, and why do the people of the constituency still remember his years of service with deep gratitude?
During his two consecutive terms he served in the House of Representatives, his commitment to the people was unwavering and profound. He made a solemn promise: that he would never turn his back on those who entrusted him with their confidence. He vowed to speak out in their times of need, to act with integrity, and to serve not for personal gain, but out of a deep sense of duty to his community.
For Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya, leadership was never about the pursuit of power; it was about the fulfillment of responsibility: the responsibility to restore dignity to his constituents; the responsibility to ensure that government serves the people, not the other way around; and the responsibility to help build a future where every child is valued, where young people have the chance to chase their dreams, where women are protected and respected, and where every hardworking man and woman can live with honor and opportunity.
Though he no longer sits in the House of Representatives as the constituency’s voice, the bond between Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya and his people remains unbroken—a legacy of trust, service, and unwavering dedication that continues to inspire.
“Though no longer in the National Assembly, he remains connected, walking through towns, meeting citizens, listening to struggles, and sharing burdens.”He hears complaints, understands hopes, and feels the prayers of ignored voices. Despite poor representation, he believes in Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu’s strength and resilience. Hon. Gaya sees parents wake up daily, struggling to feed families and unsure of their next meal. He sees educated youth striving for unreachable opportunities. He sees families loving their local government area yet feeling overlooked.”
As 2027 approaches, the choice is about constituency’s future and legacy. Choose a leader with integrity, compassion, and empathy—one who listens, acts honestly, and serves selflessly. Now, Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu must stand firm. The upcoming election decides their children’s future, not just a representative.”They affirm: experience, integrity, and accountability matters. The people know the difference between a serving leader and one unprepared leader.
They’ve seen progress in infrastructure and development under Hon. Gaya. They recall when hope and opportunity took root.”As elections approach, we discuss the representation we deserve. Our community needs a leader with humility, competence, and dedication to serving. Citizens see the choice: support a person of integrity who delivers results and prioritizes the constituency’s welfare.”His democratic contribution is unmatched; his actions are open to all. Good representation comes from service, honesty, and community bonds. The people of Ajingi, Gaya, and Albasu call on Hon. Gaya to stand again for House of Representatives, continuing his impactful work.
Today, we’re witnesses to the truth of his accomplishments. In two terms, he’s proven himself a representative—a voice of the people and believers in our local governments’ s future. He walked our paths, understood challenges, listened to concerns, and partnered in shared aspirations. He recognized elders’ strength, youth resilience, and patience. He acknowledged missed opportunities, unheard voices, and delayed ambitions.
For these reasons, the constituency urges him to declare intention to continue serving in the House of Representatives. This isn’t a political ambition—it’s a call to service, born from determination to amplify our voice, uphold justice, and ensure no community is left behind.”Together, we can build a constituency where progress is a right for all, not a privilege for few. We call on him to step forward; we offer support, prayers, and trust. This is everyone’s journey, not one person’s.”Let us remember: in our assembly, Rise together. Move forward together. By choosing Hon. Gaya, together we will succeed.
