Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commissioned the Kano Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC), located within the premises of the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Kano Municipality.
The governor said the centre was established to strengthen disease surveillance, prevention, diagnosis and emergency response in the state.
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Monday said Yusuf described the project as a major milestone in his administration’s efforts to build a resilient healthcare system.
“I am delighted to witness the completion of a project whose foundation I personally laid,” the governor said, expressing confidence that the facility would enhance the state’s capacity to tackle emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to investing in the health sector through the provision of modern infrastructure, advanced medical equipment and skilled healthcare personnel to improve healthcare delivery across the state.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, described the centre as a significant addition to Kano’s public health infrastructure.
He said the facility would play a key role in the prevention, detection, monitoring and control of communicable diseases, including tuberculosis, cholera and HIV/AIDS.
According to him, the centre is equipped with modern facilities, advanced technology and trained personnel to improve early outbreak detection, coordinate emergency responses and strengthen collaboration with relevant health institutions and development partners.
The commissioner commended the governor for prioritising the health sector and acknowledged the contributions of development partners whose technical and financial support facilitated the completion and equipping of the facility.
The Kano Centre for Disease Control is expected to serve as the state’s hub for disease surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, emergency preparedness, epidemiological research and rapid response to disease outbreaks.
It will also coordinate public health interventions and strengthen collaboration with national and international partners in preventing and containing infectious diseases across the state.
