Kano State has emerged as one of the leading states in the country’s fight against tuberculosis, as activities marking World TB Day 2026 were commemorated.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, said the state is taking deliberate steps to prevent and control the disease, describing tuberculosis as a major public health concern.
He noted, however, that the government is intensifying efforts to curb its spread across communities.
The commissioner listed common symptoms of TB to include persistent cough, excessive sweating and significant weight loss, warning that the disease is airborne and can spread easily if not properly managed.
He added that the state government remains committed to eradicating TB through targeted interventions, including the renovation of Yada Kunya General Hospital to improve treatment and patient care.
Yusuf also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his continued support towards strengthening the health sector in the state.
As part of the commemoration, health authorities reiterated the global message that tuberculosis can be eliminated through sustained efforts and collective action.
Statistics presented at the event showed that 913 people were diagnosed with TB in Kano State within the past year, out of which 720 have been successfully treated.
In addition, development partners introduced mobile healthcare vehicles to expand access to medical services in underserved communities. The vehicles have since been handed over to the state government.
Health officials urged residents to promptly seek medical attention if they experience symptoms, stressing that early detection and treatment remain critical to stopping the spread of the disease.
