Players of Kano Pillars Volleyball Club currently participating in the ongoing Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) Premier League in Abuja are facing possible eviction from their hotel over unpaid accommodation bills.
Daily Trust gathered that the former Nigerian champions, who have won the Premier League title twice and represented the country at the African Club Championship, are battling severe financial challenges that could affect their performance in the competition.
Sources close to the team disclosed that the players travelled from Kano to Abuja with the expectation that the Kano State Government would release funds to cover their allowances, accommodation and other logistics throughout the 16-day tournament.
It was also learnt that the team had to borrow money to cover fuel expenses and other incidental costs to enable them participate in the championship.
“As we speak, the players are at risk of being ejected by the hotel management despite our appeals. We have already informed the Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Dr Murtala Musa Dagumawa, and appealed for urgent intervention,” a source told Daily Trust.
The source lamented the financial situation facing sports in the state, saying the challenges have adversely affected athletes, coaches and officials.
“Sports in Kano are currently facing serious financial difficulties, and many stakeholders believe more attention should be given to the welfare of players, coaches and officials,” the source added.
When contacted, Dr Dagumawa confirmed that the commission was experiencing financial constraints but assured that efforts were being made to address the situation.
“There is indeed a financial challenge, but the commission is doing everything possible to resolve the issue,” he said.
He further assured that the Kano State Government remains committed to supporting sports development and ensuring that the state continues to record impressive performances at national and international competitions.
