In a major stride toward sustainable energy and industrial advancement, the Kano State Government has signed two landmark Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with leading renewable energy companies — Tricell Solar Solutions and IRS Green Energy Limited — to drive groundbreaking investments in renewable energy infrastructure across the state.
The signing took place during the Nigeria Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NERIF) 2025, held in Abuja an annual national platform that brings together government agencies, private sector players, development partners, and innovators to promote investment, policy dialogue, and collaboration in the renewable energy sector. The event was organized in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), which also serves as the technical advisor and coordinating body for the new projects.
Under the agreements, the two companies will establish state-of-the-art solar panel manufacturing plants in Kano State. IRS Green Energy Limited will build a facility with an annual capacity of 600 megawatts (MW), while Tricell Solar Solutions will develop another with a 500MW capacity. Together, these facilities will not only strengthen Nigeria’s renewable energy base but also reduce dependence on imported solar technologies.
Speaking with groups of journalists at the event, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Kano State Investment and Promotion Agency (KanInvest), Muhammad Nazir Halliru, described the partnership as a transformative milestone in Kano’s industrial and energy landscape.
“This milestone reflects Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s unwavering commitment to expanding access to clean and affordable power, promoting local manufacturing and industrial growth, and creating new job opportunities for the people of Kano State,” Halliru said.
He added that the initiative would establish Kano as a renewable energy and green manufacturing hub in West Africa, thereby boosting private sector confidence and attracting further domestic and foreign investments into the state’s growing energy market.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has consistently championed initiatives that promote sustainable energy solutions, innovation, and economic diversification. These new partnerships align with his administration’s vision of building a resilient, green, and economically vibrant Kano.
The renewable energy plants are expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, enhance energy access in both urban and rural communities, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan.
“With this bold step, Kano State is lighting the path toward a sustainable future. Together, we light up Kano,” Halliru concluded.
