The Kano State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has organised a three-day training programme for 132 Water, Environment, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) personnel drawn from the 44 local government areas of the state.
The training focuses on borehole maintenance aimed at improving access to safe drinking water and reducing frequent breakdowns of rural water facilities across the state.
The initiative is part of the state government’s broader efforts to strengthen grassroots capacity in water infrastructure management. By equipping local government personnel with relevant technical skills, the government seeks to reduce downtime, lower repair costs and ensure consistent access to clean water for communities.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, said the programme reflects Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to delivering democratic dividends at the grassroots.
“Access to safe water is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of public health,” the commissioner said.
“Under Governor Yusuf’s leadership, this administration is taking deliberate steps to bridge the water supply gap in both urban and rural communities. By investing in the capacity of our LGA staff, we are building a sustainable system that responds swiftly to breakdowns, reduces maintenance costs and keeps boreholes functional for the thousands of families that depend on them daily.”
The commissioner, who was represented at the workshop by the Director of Recruitment, Training and Retirement, Alhaji Ali S. Faragai, said the training would reduce dependence on external technicians and help ensure boreholes remain functional for the benefit of residents.
The cluster-based training is being conducted simultaneously in Rano, Bichi and Ungogo zones.
Participants are undergoing practical and technical sessions on maintenance, fault diagnosis, pump repair, water quality testing and record keeping to enable them respond promptly to breakdowns and sustain clean water supply at the community level.
