The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kano State, Hon. Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, SAN, today conducted an unscheduled inspection visit to the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the administration of justice and improve the welfare of correctional personnel and inmates.
The Attorney General was accompanied by the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, along with the Director of Public Prosecution, Director of Sharia Prosecution, Director of Legal Drafting, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, and other senior officials and Deputy Directors of the Ministry.
The delegation was received by CSC Muhammad Ali Kibiya and DSC Zulkifili Ibrahim on behalf of DCC Rambo Ibrahim Isah, Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, who later joined the visit.
During an interactive session with the Centre’s management, the Attorney General was briefed on key operational challenges, including persistent water shortages despite the presence of several boreholes that are not functioning effectively due to terrain-related issues. The dilapidated condition of a vehicle used for conveying inmates to court was also highlighted.
In response, the Attorney General directed the immediate provision of three water tankers and assured that arrangements would be made for the weekly supply of one to two tankers as an interim measure. He further stated that steps would be taken to establish a more reliable and sustainable water source in a nearby location.
He also instructed the management to conduct a proper assessment of the faulty vehicle for onward submission to His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to facilitate necessary intervention.
As part of the visit, the Attorney General interacted directly with inmates—both male and female—and reviewed several cases that have experienced delays, particularly those involving inmates who have not been regularly taken to court. He directed that details of such cases be compiled for urgent review and appropriate legal action by the Ministry of Justice.
In a humanitarian gesture, the Attorney General provided transport assistance to an inmate due for release who required support to return to Lagos.
The unscheduled inspection underscores the Kano State Government’s commitment to enhancing access to justice, improving conditions in custodial centres, and ensuring the timely dispensation of justice. It also reflects the Attorney General’s dedication to proactive supervision and prompt intervention where necessary.
The visit aligns with the people-centred governance and justice reform agenda of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which prioritises fairness, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
