The Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced one Mohammed Usman to ten years imprisonment without the option of a fine after he was found guilty of the offence of procuring the illegal entry of two females (whose names are withheld) from Ibadan, Oyo State, through Kano to Libya.
He received five years’ imprisonment for each of the two charges.
The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 26(1) of the TIP Act 2015.
Justice Obiorah Egwuatu delivered the verdict after finding the defendant guilty of the charged offence, as presented by the Kano Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP).
During the judgment, Barrister Nuruddeen Hassan and Khadija Umar Sani represented the prosecution, while Barrister Bala Nomau represented the defendant.
Speaking to newsmen Barrister Abdullahi Shuaibu Babale, the Kano Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, emphasized that the judgment serves as a deterrent to others involved in human trafficking.
He stated that the case began in 2021, and despite the judge’s transfer to the Abuja Division, he applied for a fiat to ensure the agency secured the conviction.
According to him, the Kano Command of NAPTIP continues to work tirelessly to combat the menace of human trafficking, ensuring that justice is served.
