The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has warned club coaches and officials against making public comments capable of discrediting match officials or damaging the image of the league.
The warning was contained in a memo signed by the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Dr Ayo Abdulrahman, in which he reminded clubs to follow approved procedures when raising complaints or grievances.
The directive followed a trending video interview involving Sporting Lagos head coach, Jeffery Buter, who questioned the integrity of the centre referee after his side’s Matchday 6 clash against Barau FC in Lagos.
The NPFL said its 2026/27 Framework and Rules prohibit players, coaches and club officials from publicly criticising or making disparaging remarks against the league and its officials.
The memo cited Appendix B, Rule 7 and Section A, Rule 5.5.2, warning clubs that further breaches would attract disciplinary action.
“Any further breach will attract appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the NPFL Framework and Rules,” the league said.
The NPFL said the directive was aimed at protecting the image of the competition and preventing comments capable of damaging the league or discouraging potential partners and sponsors.
The league also urged clubs to channel complaints through the appropriate procedures provided under its rules.
