The Nigerian basketball community is in mourning following the death of former AJUBA champion and international standout, Lawal “Larry” Garba, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of players.
Garba, who emerged as the highest scorer at the 1987 World Junior Basketball Championship in Bormio, Italy, leaves behind not only records but a lasting imprint of excellence, humility, and service to the sport.
From Bauchi to the World Stage
His basketball journey began with Bauchi State Intermediate at Oluyole ’79, before progressing to the senior national team, where he represented Nigeria at both junior and senior levels.
Garba’s performances defined an era of pride for Nigerian basketball, earning him respect both at home and abroad.
Lifelong Dedication to Basketball
Even during his final days in the hospital, Garba remained in close contact with members of the basketball fraternity, reflecting the deep relationships he cultivated over decades. Beyond playing, he served as Bauchi State Director of Sports after graduating from Ahmadu Bello University, leaving a significant impact on both grassroots and elite sports development.
Former NBA star and FIBA ambassador Olumide Oyedeji led a wave of tributes, describing Garba as “a true pillar of Nigerian basketball whose legacy will continue to inspire.”
Oyedeji expressed heartfelt condolences to Garba’s family and the wider basketball community. “This is a painful loss for all of us. Lawal Garba was more than a player; he was a symbol of dedication and excellence. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time,” he said.
On the international stage, Garba competed against some of the finest talents of his era, including Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, and Toni Kukoč. Yet, he stood tall, carving his own place in history with his scoring prowess and fearless performances.
Affectionately known as “Larry,” he is remembered not only for his achievements but also for his warmth, leadership, and enduring love for the game.
He is survived by his wife and children, who now carry forward the legacy of a man who gave his all to basketball and life.
As tributes continue to pour in, Lawal Garba’s name remains indelibly etched in the story of Nigerian basketball, and his spirit will live on in every court where the game is played.
