In just seven months as Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed gave Nigeria a bold vision — including the idea and foundation of Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). That single decision reshaped Nigeria’s unity and federal character.
Shockingly, the current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has renamed the Murtala Mohammed Expressway to Wole Soyinka Way — removing the only major federal road in Abuja that preserved Murtala’s memory. This is needless, thoughtless, and deeply insulting to those who value our national history.
As if that’s not enough, Wike recently renamed the International Conference Centre (ICC) — built during General IBB’s time — to Bola Ahmed Tinubu ICC, along with sections named after current politicians. What legacy justifies this? Why replace founding builders with present officeholders?
Abuja was not built by today’s politics, but by the vision of leaders like Murtala and IBB. If we cannot immortalize them further, we should not erase the little remembrance that still exists.
Let’s not allow sycophancy to rewrite our national story. Abuja belongs to every Nigerian, and its landmarks should reflect sacrifice, not political loyalty.
May Allah have mercy on General Murtala Mohammed.
Ameen.
