The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has urged the Kano State Government to provide a standard laboratory and qualified personnel for the State Consumer Protection Council to enhance effective monitoring and testing of goods and products for the protection of consumers.
SON also advised the state government to recruit dedicated and trustworthy officers to handle the testing of suspected substandard products to enable the council effectively discharge its statutory responsibilities.
The Kano State Coordinator of SON, Engineer Babangida Mainasara, made the call while receiving officials of the Kano State Consumer Protection Council led by its new Executive Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, during a courtesy visit to his office.
Mainasara congratulated Dr Muhammad on his appointment and stressed that protecting consumers’ interests requires thorough scrutiny of business activities to safeguard the health, safety and economic wellbeing of the people.
He explained that SON is mandated to ensure that raw materials, goods and finished products meet the required standards for human consumption.
The coordinator also pledged the organisation’s support and cooperation with the council towards achieving sustainable development.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Consumer Protection Council, Dr Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, said the visit was aimed at strengthening synergy and enhancing cordial working relations between the two agencies in the fight against substandard products.
He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to collaborating with SON and development partners to protect lives and improve the economic wellbeing of citizens.
