Athletes’ welfare and quality leadership have been identified as key factors behind the recent successes recorded in Nigeria’s sports sector following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s restoration of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
The Special Assistant on Media to the Director-General of the NSC, Mr Kola Daniel, stated this on Tuesday in Glasgow, Scotland, host city of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where Team Nigeria has so far won six gold and four silver medals.
Daniel said the Commission’s leadership, under its Chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has prioritised athletes’ welfare through initiatives such as the instant cash reward scheme, which ensures medal-winning athletes receive their financial rewards immediately after stepping off the podium, as well as the training grants policy.
According to him, the welfare initiatives and leadership approach have boosted athletes’ confidence, fostered a winning mentality and strengthened their belief that they can compete successfully on the global stage.
He expressed optimism about the future of Nigerian sports, saying the ongoing reforms are laying a solid foundation for sustained growth and international success.
Daniel also commended President Tinubu for repositioning the country’s sports sector through what he described as visionary leadership and continued support for the Commission’s programmes.
He added that he is optimistic the Super Falcons will also deliver an impressive performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as they pursue a record-extending 11th continental title.
