Every 5th October is celebrated as World Teacher’s Day to recognize the contributions of teachers to the development of the society. The Day has been cebrated since 1994 as part of the anniversary to commemorate the adoption of the 1966 International Labour Organization/UNICEF recommendations on the rights and responsibilities of teachers worldwide.
The theme of 2024 World Teacher’s Day is “Valuing Teacher’s Voices: Towards a new Social Contract for Education” to emphasize the imperative of teachers inclusiveness and addressing the numerous challenges they are facing.
This year’s celebration is coming at a critical time when many teachers are facing serious challenges globally.
In countries like Nigeria, teaching profession is relegated to the background. Many people are in the profession because they had failed to secure more “lucrative” jobs. This is mainly because teachers are poorly renumerated and their welfare is not given adequate attention by their employers. Teachers deserved to be respected, trained and well remunerated.
There is urgent need to improve the welfare if teachers for a better world. Teachers are the nation builders.
